Description / Expertise

'F Smythson, Bond Street' An early example of a luxury Edwardian Oak and Brass Desk Top Letter Box in excellent condition by Smythson, the luxury stationery and leather goods company, supplier to the Royal Household, with original brass makers label 'F Smythson 133 New Bond Street London W', with original Bramah lock and key.The sloping top has a brass slot for letters above a framed porcelain plaque window with a bevelled glass to show collection times both AM and PM, the front with a bevelled glass window. Note: Frank Smythson opened his first shop on 29th September 1887 at 133 New Bond Street. His trade card described his business as 'First class stationery, leather goods and cabinet work'. While holding the Queen Mother's Warrant, Smythson was one of only eight companies in the world to hold all four Royal Warrants at the same time. This is just the perfect present for any fans of Downton Abbey! We note Smythson's offering a brand new briefcase for Christmas at £1,400- which does rather put this letter box into perspective and makes one wonder which will still be around in another 100 years or more.
