Most elegant, early 19th Century mahogany Stick Barometer, with ‘'swan-neck' pediment over engraved silvered brass register plate, signed by the maker and bearing rack-and-pinion operated vernier. The case of well-patinated ‘flame’ mahogany, banded in ebony and inset with long detachable mercury Fahrenheit thermometer; the original concealed barometer tube terminating behind turned cistern cover.

Egerton Smith and his son, also Egerton, were accomplished mathematical instrument makers, working from premises in Pool Lane from the mid-1760’s, through 1788, when the father died, until 1807. This instrument dates from their partnership period.
