Most attractive and finely proportioned 19th Century “Rio” Rosewood-cased dwarf Wheel Barometer; with ‘'swan-neck' pediment over strikingly figured case, with well engraved silvered brass detachable, bow-fronted Fahrenheit thermometer and unusual 6-inch diameter barometer dial, signed by the maker. Unusually, still retains its original barometer tube

The second of three sons of the renowned instrument maker, Alexander Adie of Edinburgh Richard Adie set up the Company’s Liverpool branch in Bold St at the age of 25, specialising in barometers. On the death of brother John in 1857, he ran both the Edinburgh and Liverpool branches until his death in 1881.
