A stunning and enormous walnut longcase clock by Markwick of London standing at over 10.5 foot tall. The clock can only have been commissioned for a very substantial Georgian house by a prestigious architect such as Vanburg, Paine or James Gibb. Chimes are at the quarters on six bells with a "no strike" facility.
The movement has thick brass plates with anchor escapement.
30 day. The walnut case with, at the top, two large capped walnut columns, below a rectangular door with a breakarch, all supported by a massive base with double skirt.. c1725
James Markwick was the son of a London clockmaker and finished his apprenticeship in 1692. He later went into business with his son-in-law, Robert Markham and was very highly regarded in the London market and, more latterly, gained an excellent reputation in the Ottoman Empire. Markwick was Master of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers. He died in 1730
