Provenance

Giuseppe Maggiolini, died Nov 1814, was the pre eminent cabinetmaker in Milan during the late 18th century. He was also a noted marquetry maker.

Description / Expertise

An important 18th century Italian Maggiolini marquetry commode. The beautifully quartered veneered top with central roundel of leaf decoration centred by a neoclassical bust of a man with a band inlaid into ebony of fine trailing leaf decoration with rosewood and walnut crossbanding with below a frieze drawer of walnut wonderfully inlaid with satinwood with a motif of urns and floral swags with below a further two full length drawers with later brass plate handles, the centre of the two drawers with neoclassical inlaid panel, the drawers between inlaid marquetry stiles terminating in spade feet with the sides of the commode with similar exotic inlays.
