In 1844 he was called to the Bar, in 1851 he moved from Wellsbourne, Warwickshire, to Highgrove House, Gloucestershire. He was a friend and patron of the architect William Burges and of the watercolour artist David Cox. He is known for his fine watercolours of shells.
